What To Expect
How long will I be there? When you arrive for the assessment you will check in. If you do not have an appointment or no one has called ahead they will get your basic information. They will also likely have you complete some paperwork while you wait. The length of the process can vary widely based on how busy they are at the time you arrive (just like at an ER). You should plan on it taking a few hours.
What is the assessment like? Based on the age of the child they may do the assessment without the parent in the room – this often allows the adolescent to feel more candid. The assessment will consent of a series of questions assessing symptoms of depression, safety and at-risk behaviors, substance use, etc… After the clinician completes the assessment, they will consult with one of their psychiatrists to determine the best recommendation for treatment.
What services will be offered? The standard options are: inpatient for crisis stabilization (typically lasts for 3-7 days), partial hospitalization (PHP) which runs Monday – Friday usually similar hours to a school day (typically lasts for 2-4 weeks), intensive outpatient (IOP) which usually runs three to five days a week for about 3 hours per session (typically lasts 2-4 weeks), or individual counseling outside of the hospital setting. The different levels of programs can run together or isolated; meaning someone might start inpatient then transition to partial hospitalization or someone might just do one of the programs. Parents/Guardian may also choose to use an outside clinician if the treatment facility if the child is not committed for crisis stabilization. If the treatment facility believes, the student is in immediate danger of hurting himself or herself or other they can commit the student involuntarily. This means the parent or guardian must comply with the treatment recommendations by the facility and leave the student for crisis stabilization up to 72 hours.
